How can you maximize your dog boarding business? After all, your home may only appropriately fit one or two additional dogs at a time. Providing you have the time and accommodations, add-ons may be the way to build your business.
Maximize dog boarding by also walking dogs
I do not recommend charging overnight guests for you to walk their dog. My view is that you are getting paid to care for their dog and all the elements that go along with that, including walking. However, that doesn’t mean that in addition to your overnight guests you can’t add on some dog walking or drop-in services.
Since I work full-time, this type of add on has not worked well for me. We do have a few drop-in clients, but I’ve put that part of profile on hold. While I can easily care for dogs staying with us, having to get in my car and go to someone’s house can be challenging time-wise. If I’m comfy, cozy in bed, I can get up and let the dogs in the backyard to relieve themselves. When a dog is waiting for me somewhere, I’ll have to get up, get dressed, and drive over there.
If you are up anyways (I’m jealous of you early birds!), this is an easy way to add on some additional business.
Maximize dog boarding by offering bathing services
I’ll admit, we have not added this on as a service, although we did have to bathe one dog who LOVED mud. I think this would be a great and easy feature to add, though, if you have the time. Who would not want their dog to come home all clean and sweet-smelling?
Maximize dog boarding by picking up and dropping off your charges
I have this as an option on my profile, but I’ve never actually had a client take me up on it so I don’t know if this is something that could be worthwhile. Maybe it’s dependent on the type of clients you service or the area you live in.
That said, I do provide this service at no charge for regular, good customers.
Maximize dog boarding by taking pets to the vet
This could be a great extra to offer, with a dog boarding or on its own. For a busy professional, this might just be the ticket, especially if local vets don’t have convenient hours but you have your days free. Again, I’ve provided this service for good clients at no charge.
Maximize dog boarding by training your guests
Do you have experience training dogs? Or at the very least a knack for it? I know I would pay extra for such a service!
Maximize dog boarding with high quality pet photos
I don’t offer this (beyond providing the requisite text photos), but a local dog boarder throws in pet portraits with every stay. I think that’s so cool! Something like pet photos could easily be an extra service if you have a talent with getting pets to pose.
These are really just the most basic, most obvious ideas. What other ideas do you have? Have you found unique ways to add to your dog boarding business?
